VT Coupe - To Monaro or Not to Monaro?
So a new Monaro on the market, I'm sure we'd all like to see that!!!! Well Holden, it's too late. You created the beast , it's time to let it out the box.
Holden must build the new Monaro after stealing the Show by unveiling the best kept secret in Australian motoring at the Sydney Exhibition Centre when it produced a VT Holden Coupe tentatively named "Monica". Not one journalist or motoring magazine had a clue to what was secretly placed in the Exhibition Centre on October 15, 1998 under the cover of darkness in a Top Secret manouvre.
"Within minutes of the car's unveiling word had spread like magic through the ranks of assembled motoring press and car industry heavies , "there is a new Monaro in town. You could hear the sounds of jaws hitting the carpeted floors of the Exhibition Centre when the covers came off 'Monica'. " (Ged Bulmer - Motor, December 1998)
The opportunity now beckons for the release of the VT "Monaro" Coupe as interest in the greatest Aussie Muscle car is at an all time high. Many of the legion of Monaro fans were not even born when the Monaro ruled the Mountain and have had to rely on the magazines of the day or the internet to feed ther Monaro appetite.
And on the subject of what to call the new VT Coupe which Holden could find itself in a quandry there is this -
"Holden may have some troubles choosing a name for its stunningly styled coupe but the assembled audience at the Motor Show had no such qualm- it was a Monaro. End of discussion." (Ged Bulmer - Motor, December 1998)
The name 'Monica' was chosen as the project was so secret that only a few of the top Generals at Holden knew of the project that was going on behind closed doors.( ala Bill Clinton)

26/7/2000 - Gday, I have some contacts into holden and have heard the following VX coupe is still in phase of production around the year 2002 they just aquired a manager from germany who worked on the Opel Speedster and is interested in the project. Holden around the end of year will aquire a Opel Speedster as well that uses many Lotus parts. This is done to compete with the porsche boxter and other sports cars. It will be sold for au$69,000 The best one of all is that July 1st. importing laws changed making it available to import performance cars in large volumes from overseas countrys (ie USA) Ford has taken advantage of this and is going to import the Rustang cobra. But better yet the General loves competition so you may see 100 Chevrolet Corvettes with LS1s being sold at Holden Dealerships. Corvette is hands down quicker than the Mustang. All these nice cars but petrol prices keep rising whats doing? Thanks for the info Fraser -Kym
9/5/2001 - It's official, the new VX Coupe will be called the Monaro, Holden has got it right again! Hopefully the new Monaro will be released in November 2001. Check in for more details.
